USABILITY

Why Usability?

Why Usability?

An online presence is more important than ever, and easy-to-use websites have better returns. The following fast usability tests can scale to any size or stage of website.

The Five   Second Test

A study where participants are shown a web page for five seconds and are asked questions about what stood out to them, what they remember, and their first impressions.

Purpose To measure and understand how quickly and how well a web page’s design communicates your message.

The Five   Second Test

How to do it: Use a live page, design or screenshot.  Don’t reveal that it’s a recall test. Show the design for 5 seconds.  Gauge user thoughts on color, layout, busyness, and what they recall most.

The Unmoderated Card Sorting Test

A research method where participants are given labeled cards and are asked to group them in a way that makes sense to them - in this case, without a moderator.

Purpose Uncover users’ mental models to make your designs user-centered and your website easy to navigate.

The Unmoderated Card Sorting Test

How to do it: Gather 15 participants. Make a list of your content topics. Label a card with each one. Have users sort cards how they see fit. Use insight to inform your site structure.

The First Click Test

Users who make the right first click complete their task 87% of the time, compared to only 46% of those who make the wrong first click.

Purpose To discover how intuitive your website is to your typical users and increase conversion rates.

The First Click Test

How to do it: Provide a task to complete.  Track how long it takes to click on an element.  Track whether they make the right choice. Gauge the reasons for their choice or hesitation.

Always Test Usability

Always Test Usability

To ensure your website is functional, efficient, meets users’ needs and growing expectations, and is intuitive for new visitors, you should continually test your usability.
